My name is Joop Adema. I am a PhD student at the LMU and working at the ifo Institute in Munich. I research the economics of migration, and more specifically how the media and new technologies matter for international migration, but am also interested in political economy, labor economics and international trade. In my research, I make use of a wide set of econometric and data science tools, such as NLP. A few highlights of what I have studied or would like to study:
– Modern technologies:
- How do mobile technologies change migration decisions, such as the general access to the internet or the use of specific technologies?
- Do migrants use specific smartphone applications or internet fora to integrate into their destination countries?
- Do specific technologies lower migration costs and generate aspirations to emigrate?
– Media Economics:
- How does the media affect migration decisions? Do people update their migration plans based on the migration experiences of others?
- How does the media portray migrants and how does this affect attitudes towards against immigrants and paths of integration?
– Technological change:
- How does robotization affect labor markets? Why is there a strong backlash against robotization and immigration in some places, but not in others?
- How does technological change affect the welfare impacts of immigration?
– Economics of Irregular and Refugee Migration:
- How do refugees and irregular migrants decide on targets countries, coordinate how do they share information in a low-information environment?
